Pet Advice

Small pets need specialist care too.

Rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, and other small pets can become unwell quickly, so diet, housing, and observation are especially important. Keeping their environment clean, calm, and species-appropriate makes a major difference.

Good routine care

  • Use the correct diet for the species, including hay-based feeding where required.
  • Keep enclosures spacious, dry, clean, and safe from temperature extremes.
  • Handle gently and consistently to reduce stress.
  • Monitor teeth, droppings, appetite, movement, and breathing.

Book help quickly if you notice

  • Reduced appetite or no droppings.
  • Runny nose, noisy breathing, or discharge from the eyes.
  • Swelling, head tilt, limping, or obvious pain.
  • Lethargy or unusual stillness, especially in rabbits and guinea pigs.

Birds and exotic pets

Specialist species need specialist attention.

Birds often hide signs of illness until they are seriously unwell. Changes in appetite, droppings, breathing, posture, feathers, or vocal behaviour should be checked quickly by a vet with suitable experience.
